The biggest blocked fleet in the EU, and the one most often overstated — figures of 375,000 or even 700,000 Teslas circulate online, but the KBA's own parc count was 200,976 on 1 January 2026. Registrations collapsed 48% in 2025 and then nearly tripled in 2026, so the fleet is growing fast again while FSD stays switched off.

KBA counted 200,976 Teslas in the German parc on 1 January 2026. Adding 32,255 new registrations from January to August 2026 gives roughly 233,000 on the road.

Registrations are the yearly flow of new cars, not the fleet. The 233,000 figure above is the stock — every Tesla currently on the road. 2026 covers January to 31 August, so it is not comparable with a full year: like for like it is +182% against January–August 2025.
Road safety baseline
A safer baseline means less room for FSD to help. Germany is already safer than the EU average, which is why the figures here look modest next to countries with the same fleet size.
How this number is worked out
3,078 road deaths × 0.83 crash reduction × ( 233,000 the whole Tesla fleet ÷ 33M vehicles ) = 17.9 lives / year
Because FSD is blocked here, the calculation uses the whole 233,000-car fleet: this is what Germany is currently giving up, not what it is getting. The 83% figure is the midpoint of Tesla's published crash-rate data; the vehicle total assumes 400 vehicles per 1,000 people. Full workings on the methodology page.
Who decides
Germany has not recognised the Dutch type approval. As an EU member it could recognise it tomorrow, as six other members already have — or wait for the bloc-wide vote.
